Hey Reader,

If you hate risk but love pressure, there is a clear path for you to make $1 million a year.

I’m going to talk to operators and owners both today.

For operators, it’s an opportunity.
For owners, it’s a warning shot...

Quote of the Week

Your income shouldn’t be decided by salary bands or job titles. It should be decided by the value you create.

This Week's Insight

How I’d Make $1 Million a Year

We’ve never seen a better time in our lifetime for an individual performer inside a company to be exceptionally impactful to profitability.

I spend a significant amount of my time interviewing people. High performers. Leaders. Operators. Builders.

And while none of our companies advertise a $1 million salary (and very few CEO job descriptions in the world do either), many roles absolutely have the earning potential to exceed $1 million per year.

How? Simple:

That income is not handed to you. It is earned through contribution.

Every real entrepreneur wants to pay exceptional performers as much money as possible. Not out of generosity. Out of self-interest.

Why I Want $1M Earners Inside My Companies

If you’re a business owner reading this, maybe you’re thinking…

“Speak for yourself Vic. I’m not really interested in writing $80,000 checks every month…”

If that’s you, I understand this response.

But if this is also you…

  • “I want to stop being the ceiling”
  • “I want to keep my A-players from leaving”
  • “I want to avoid hiring the wrong exec”

…Then you understand the contradiction.

The scariest person in your company is the top performer you underpay.

The second scariest is the “professional executive” with a big resume, big salary, and no accountability.

There are two types of hires:

Expensive passengers and profit drivers.

I’d rather overpay someone who can show me the math than underpay someone who hides behind a title.

Why Operator Opportunity Is Bigger Than Ever

The leverage available to a single high performer has never been greater.

10 years ago, creating $5 million in incremental profit required a team.

Today, 1 person with the right skills can access tools that used to require entire departments.

  • Data analysis that took weeks now takes hours.
  • Customer insights that required consultants now live in dashboards.
  • Research, automation, content creation, and integrated systems amplify what one exceptional person can deliver.

The infrastructure exists for individual contributors to operate at a level that was previously impossible.

But the tools do not do the work.

They multiply the work of people who already think like owners…

If I were an entrepreneurial professional who didn’t want the risk of starting my own business, here’s the exact 5-step plan I’d follow:

Step 1: Be an A-Player

Before we talk about money, we need to talk about standards.

A-players are rare for a reason.

Most people like the idea of being an A-player. Very few people like what it requires.

Step 2: Understand How Businesses Make Money

Earning 7 figures inside a company means you must understand the business better than most owners.

If you cannot explain how the business makes money, keeps money, and grows money, you cannot credibly ask to participate in it.

That means understanding the mechanics behind the terms:

Step 3: Create $3 to $5 Million in Incremental Profitability

This is where it becomes practical.

If you want to make $1 million a year, the math is straightforward. (The path is not.)

If you can directly and measurably contribute $3 to $5 million in incremental profitability, then earning 20-30% of that contribution is completely reasonable.

This is how real compensation conversations work.

Not salary bands. Not job titles. Not benchmarking surveys.

Value created = Value shared

Your job is to answer 1 question clearly and credibly:

“How do I personally create millions of dollars in incremental profit that would not exist without me?”

Owners:

This is why I like contribution-based pay.

It eliminates emotion.

If someone claims they deserve $X/year but can’t clearly explain how they create 3-5x that in incremental profit, the conversation ends. No politics. No benchmarking games. No ego.

Step 4: Get An Owner Mindset (Without Owner Risk)

This is the part most people overlook.

Operating at this level inside a company gives you an ownership mindset without ownership risk.

Entrepreneurs fund all of this themselves. High-performing operators inside strong companies get to leverage it. That is a powerful trade.

Step 5: The Accountability That Comes With It

Here’s the hard part:

If you are paid like an owner, you are accountable like one.

Your compensation is tied to results. No hiding, excuses, or politics.

That responsibility is heavy. Most people do not actually want it. They want the upside without the pressure.

That is why so few ever reach this level.

Operators 🤝 Owners

The greatest wins in every business I have built came from high-capacity, high-achieving leaders who directly contributed to profitability.

Those people were never overpaid.

If someone inside one of my companies is truly creating millions in profit and not being compensated accordingly, I want them knocking on my door. That conversation is welcomed.

I do not fear paying people $1 million a year.

I welcome it.

Why Doesn’t Everyone Do It?

Most people do not want to work this hard.

They don’t want to be measured. They don’t want the responsibility.

And that is okay.

This path is not for everyone.

But if you want to make $1 million a year inside a company, the ball is in your court. Not because someone will offer it to you. But because you are willing to earn it.

To operators:

If you can show how you create millions in incremental profit, you’ve rightly earned a piece of that profit.

To owners:

If someone on your team can do this and isn’t being paid accordingly, you’re not withholding generosity… You’re losing leverage.
